Love in Two Languages, translated from the original French novel Amour bilingue by Abdelkebir Khatibi, is a lyrical, haunting account of a love affair between an Arab man and a French woman. Their shared language is French, and the theme of the narrator's meditation is translation: what is translation, where in the being does it take place, and when is it impossible. The narrative shifts continuously from first person to third and back again, creating a mysterious sense of translation within the [narrator's] self, translation between objectivity and subjectivity.
The author in fact approaches translation not only as an act of transforming one language into another, but as an act inherent in living as a being who possesses language.
